New review will go up before the end of the week. Time went by quickly after that last one; just don’t want to scare you into running away thinking it’ll be another random hiatus again. My partners in crime and I just started rehearsals for a self-written, self-directed, self-produced and partially self-acted show (!!!) so it got a little hectic with the prep in the past couple of weeks.

So the four or so of you regular readers who didn’t jump ship after I took a year-long break last time…it’ll be okay.

(If you have no idea what I’m talking about, shameless plug.)

Yes, I saw Man of Steel. I can see why critics tore it apart; it’s kind of a mess at times and focuses way more on the uninteresting (but very well-rendered) CGI super-fights than it should. That said, seeing the Kryptonian fights finally visualized after years of never having the technology to see them in full force in live action was incredibly entertaining.

And there’s a lot of potential for sequels, character-wise; the Daily Planet environment was fun, Lois is written wonderfully, and the Kent family was a good mix of sappy, warm and nostalgic. Hans Zimmer’s loud booming score works better for Superman than it did for Batman, too.

I wish we could have seen more of the cast—Henry Cavill included—living their lives and having conversations rather than just being in on the action and delivering exposition, because it’s good cast. Russell Crowe, surprisingly enough, stole the show for me; I think he’s my favorite Jor-El now, and it’s the first time I’ve ever truly cared about Jor-El as a character.

There’s still things I prefer of the previous era (the crystal-based Krypton of the Reeve films and Smallville are more creative and alien to me than the bleaker liquid metal stuff of these films, for example.) But overall, I’m excited to see where this can go. It wasn’t a perfect first outing, but I can see it flourishing in its sequels.

The most recent Mystery Incorporated series utilizes this idea to the absolute fullest extent. It’s not as subtle, but it works really well. Which is one of many reasons why I love Scooby Doo!: Mystery Incorporated and you should all watch it.

As much as I’ll admit that Smallville was, at times, not a very good show, any time I rewatch it, I’m surprise myself with how much quality there is within. A lot of the bad stuff sticks out, for sure, but there are so many insanely strong elements and moments that the general fandom—both of the show and of comic books and Superman in general—tend to overlook.

The early seasons have a certain earnestness and hope to them that should be present in all Superman material, but almost never is (with the exception of the DCAU.) The later seasons, on the other hand, do a pretty damn good job at bringing in a lot of pathos to the indulgent comic book stuff that got crammed in towards the end. Like, people heard about that Absolute Justice stuff (which, while fun, was far from the best the show had to offer) and all the random characters that popped up towards the end. But damn, some of these characters were impeccably well-realized, and are probably the only times we’ll ever see some of them in live action, in all honesty. It’s not always great, but when it is, the show hits the nail on the head, even beyond things people know, like the Luthors. Phil Morris is my favorite Martian Manhunter, for example, even compared to JLU. Zatanna was loads of fun. The Doomsday arc might have failed at the end, but all the lead-up to it was fascinating, and Sam Witwer is a fucking gift. But people just kinda ignore it all most of the time in favor of complaining about the relationship drama, or that one time Pete got super-stretch powers from Stride gum.

I was watching some Season 9 last night—which is just such an amazing season of the show that no one watched—and it’s just so well-plotted and, more importantly, a lot of fucking fun. Like, SO much fun. It’s campy at times, but it’s also genuinely funny other times and incredibly powerful at other points.

It hit me when I watched a late entry into that season, “Sacrifice”, and Zod, convinced by his own paranoia, mistakenly murders Faora, only to realized he also killed his own unborn child in the process…which he discovers after picking up the fetus’s faint heartbeat, which he listens to as it stops. Then he pins the death on Clark to convince his army to take over Earth. Like…this shit is exactly what I want from superhero stories. A mix of the fantastical but used to tell these intense emotional stories.

But people just remember the show because “Lana Lang was so annoying” and “Pete was a black guy.”

Even though this show is called Gargoyles, we’ve got a wealth of human characters on the roster that, in a lot of ways, flesh out this world better than our main clan. Elisa Maza and David Xanatos are near polar opposites, but they’ve both forcibly intertwined themselves in the this strange new world, albeit for very different reasons. The existence of the gargoyles is going to make an impact on them both (and vice versa), and though this episode doesn’t go terribly far with that concept, it still delivers one of the strongest, most straightforward episodes of the season.
