Moffat’s the kind of writer who likes watching you suffer through his intricate plot twists and turns. RTD was the kind of writer who snuck up behind you, dropped a bombshell, and then ran away cackling into the night.

I like both RTD and Moffat, and I usually just shrug whenever someone says they prefer one over the other, but this argument really bothers me.  

Comparing the Face of Boe reference to what I’m assuming is Moffat’s run as a whole doesn’t make sense, considering that wasn’t really a “plot twist” so much as a “fun throw it in joke.”  From a meta-standpoint, the writing staff had even admitted that there’s far from common agreement over whether it’s true, and RTD was just being silly by throwing it in.  So considering that, and the fact that impacts nothing about anything, it’s not really a “plot twist” in the sense that the person seems to be using it.  It’s a cute and clever gag, and I adore that scene, but using this as a baseline for “Why RTD’s plot twists are better than Moffat’s” is like someone basing why DC is better than Marvel on “The Joker had a funny line once but Civil War totally ruined comics.”

But even at that, my main beef is…what the heck does “suffer through plot twists” mean?  Isn’t that the whole point of watching a story unfold?  Like, you don’t want to see surprising shit happen in the plot?  What do you want to see?  A bunch of people sitting around talking then at the last second someone gets up and says “Oh btw that lady is your wife lol!” and then it ends and nothing comes of it?  Because that’s what it means to not “suffer” through plot twists and turns.  Moffat haters complain about the “Doctor was the Tesselecta” ending all the time, how that was a cop out and such, but that’s exactly what that quote is talking about.  Having a plot twist quietly sneaking up and being thrown in and as the writer runs away cackling.  The one time Moffat did that, everyone hated him for it.

I get preferring RTD’s more fun, actiony, and colorful storytelling to Moffat’s more complicated, cerebral and time-heavy stories.  I prefer one or the other depending on my mood.  But I hate when Moffat-haters just take every opportunity to bring up why he sucks, even when the argument doesn’t hold any weight because the original post had nothing to do with that whatsoever.
